How it all began; Sadie’s Story.

The idea for this celebration is a collaborative effort of Sadie, Sam, Clyde and Pearl, some of the cats who live in Bloomington, Minnesota with their human, Grace. Sadie is the “oldest and wisest”, at least according to Sadie, so she has asked to tell about the origin of the celebration.

Although my brothers, sister and I don’t get along very well, one day we had a temporary truce and were all sitting in our human’s office while she was working. We were lounging on the desktops, the floor and the bookcase.

Sam, the big orange and white guy, mumbled that he had heard something about kids and even those other unspeakable creatures who sit on command and beg for treats being able to go to work with their humans. (I’m not quite sure why Sam brought this up since he’s usually happy just lying in the middle of the floor.)

Clyde, ever the nosy one, wanted to know more about it and thought it sounded like fun, since he always enjoys helping our human with her work. Pearl thought it might be a good place to get some food.

Although I am the smallest, I am without a doubt the most worldly, so it fell on me to set these guys straight about “going to work”. I explained as patiently as possible to these dimwits that although our human works in her office in our home and we get to sit on her desk and in front of her monitor, it doesn’t usually work that way.

“Work” and the “office”, I continued, are where most humans go when they aren’t waiting on their cats. They get in a car, those noisy scary things, and head to the office. At the office there is more noise, lots of machines, lots of humans and no naps! Worst of all, some of the humans think that they are the bosses and put everybody to work.

(I thought this was funny since everybody knows I’m the boss. But when I said so, the other cats became furious, each one hissing that of course they are boss. After our human calmed things down with a helping of tuna for each of us, we did manage to have a good laugh together – imagine humans being the boss – hah! At least we agreed on that.)

We also agreed that we would NOT want to leave home to go to an office and would NOT ever work, no matter where we were. Still, Clyde and Sam whined – it isn’t fair that kids and those unspeakable creatures get special treatment. Everybody knows that cats deserve the most special of everything. Pearl just kept on asking where and when there would be food.

After we had this discussion, we started nagging and badgering our human for an extra special day for cats – one where we could stay home and be worshipped and pampered, as is our due. This celebration is the result.

I hope you and your cats enjoy celebrating as much as we’ve enjoyed planning this event (badgering the human was especially enjoyable).
